Hi, my name is Matt and I am the owner of Great Lakes Swim Platforms, to save you some time, please take a peek at some of our customers most frequently asked questions.
Rarely, If \when we receive photo’s from customers after they install their new swim platform we try to add them to our website as soon as possible. It is very unlikely we will have additional photos to provide. Please visit our Makes and Models page to see pictures of swim platforms and a list of models we have templates for.

At Great Lakes Swim Platforms we continually study our industries pricing and do everything we can to be competitively priced at all times.
If you think you have a valid quote that is a lot less than the price we offered you please discuss that with us, We do offer to price match competitors quotes if it is possible for us to do so.
Due to the regular changes in material and transportation costs, our pricing is subject to change, all swim platform quotes are only valid for 30 days.
You can check our Makes and Models page to see if we have previously made a platform for your model boat. If you do not find your boat on this list we likely do not have a template for your boat and we will have to come up with a plan to get one made. Usually we can instruct you to do this yourself, it isn’t that hard and requires readily available inexpensive materials, dollar store Bristol board is the most commonly used material. If it is not possible for you to make the template often a local handyman or marina can do the job. In some cases depending on the location of the boat we will come out to make the template.
We do. If you have a quote from a competitor we are happy to look it over and see what we can do to offer you a matching quote. We cant guarantee we will be able to every time but we will try.
Sure, but it is more complicated. We sell many platforms to boaters on the US side of the Great Lakes, usually we will deliver that platform to a pre-arranged location on the Canada side of the border and the client will cross the border and pick up the platform.
For clients from different Provinces we work with them to arrange their own delivery methods, but the ownness is on the client to arrange delivery.
We will deliver platforms within the province of Ontario for a reasonable fee.
A transom mount style platform that mounts onto a flat transom with brackets. This type of platform is commonly found on Trawlers, aft cabin and sedan style boats and on most boats built prior to 1990.
A top mount platform is a platform mounted on top of a smaller intergraded swim platform. This is a more common installation on small to larger style boats that were produced after 1990.
This is another one of those questions that can misleading. We try to keep to 4-6 weeks lead times but their are other factors that impact the timeline.
It takes about 2 weeks for us to build your platform from the time we prep the mold, do the fiberglass work, trim it and put on the accessories, like the ladder, trim and any other option you have requested. But.. it also depends on how many orders are placed ahead of your order, we can only fiberglass a couple of platforms a week and we only have 1 mold for each size platform, so if you are 10th in line for example it may be 5 weeks or longer before we get started. That is why we encourage people to place their orders in the fall or right after Christmas for Spring deliveries.
The main reason is that it just helps us plan an approach on how to offer you the best service possible.
The swim platforms are a large and reasonably heavy object so knowing your boats location helps us offer you solutions for delivery, making templates, pick up locations etc. It just helps us visualize any obstacles in making and you receiving your order.
The quick answer is “NO”! I may be able to give you a list of customers that you can pay to swap spots with you? lol.. Just kidding, the answer is still NO.
We offer a 5 year warranty against manufacturing flaws.
Your swim platform can be utilized in so many ways, it’s not unusual for our customers to customize their platform to their specialized needs, from mounting hammocks, beach umbrellas to giving their a dog a place to go. But for the most part the platform is used for sitting, swimming, cooking and boarding your boat etc..
With that in mind the standard options that come with your Swim Platform are:
- a 4 step ladder
- 2 vents
- white heavy duty rub rail
- colour matching gelcoat
- installation hardware
Additional options can include:
- grab handles
- flush mount cleats
- BBQ posts,
- additional ladders
- additional vents
We can offer you a variety of these products to help customize your platform to your needs.
*Many people add lighting and dinghy davits, we do not offer these products but you can easily install them after you purchase and install your swim platform.
The optional vents are useful to allow water to quickly run off the platform or allow a surge of water to pass through the platform after stopping hard. We recommend adding vents if your platform sits less that 6-8 inches above the water when the boat is not underway. They can also be useful as a handle when climbing out of the water.
Our platforms come standard with a 4 step ladder which is mounted under the platform. if you wish you can upgrade to a ladder mounted in a pocket with a lid on top of the platform.
The ladder can be mounted in a location of your choice on the platform.
A Great Lakes Swim Platform will weigh about 3 pounds per square foot. So generally 80 to 150 pounds depending on the size of the platform.
Lol.. this question usually leads to me giving a lecture, so excuse me I will try to be brief…
We rate our platforms to hold about 800 to 1000 Ibs, that is our standard answer. But, every installation presents variables that can impact the load your platform will be capable of managing, also the intended use can add variables to consider. When I picture what the platform is being used for it is in calm seas, or at dock and the weight is reasonably distributed on the platform. e.g. 4 people sitting around playing a game, having a meal etc..
The main reason people seem to ask this is because they want to transport PWC’s, Dinghy’s etc.. many (most!) of these items can weight much more than a 1000 Ibs, and where do people want to mount them… right at the very back edge of their platform just hanging off a couple of metal brackets\arms, these over weight item’s are just hanging out their looking pretty, and this will probably be fine in calm water at slow speeds or at dock, but I have seen many a tragic outcome when people are flying through a 3 foot chop at 30 KPH with a 1220 lb. center console dinghy hanging off the back of the platform, often something gives, think about it.
The long and short of it is that weight the platform can hold is the least important question when planning how to transport heavy items on your platform. Usually this leads to designing your platform to do what you need and this is now not going to be one of our standard swim platforms. we may have to reinforce areas that your brackets mount to or use more heavy duty installation hardware etc.. please talk to us before assuming a weight rating guarantees a safe outcome on the water.
